Malaysia’s East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project reached a landmark moment as its very first Electric Multiple Unit set, designated EMU101, made its inaugural test run into Gombak Station, Selangor, arriving at 1:50 PM on 12 August 2026.
This milestone comes immediately on the heels of a critical infrastructure breakthrough on 11 August, when project owner Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) and main contractor China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) officially completed the energization of Feeder Station 08 (FS08) in Maran, Pahang. Activating its 132kV high-voltage power supply completes the energization of all 10 feeder stations along the line, establishing the main electrical power backbone that stretches from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, all the way to Gombak.
Manufactured by CRRC Dalian, the ECRL passenger fleet utilizes a specialized 6-car power concentrated EMU configuration designed to operate at top speeds of 160 km/h.
Unlike conventional power distributed EMUs where traction motors are scattered underneath individual passenger cars, this power-concentrated train set features a dedicated FXD3-J electric power unit at the head, pulling five trailer passenger coaches including a control car at the rear to enable full push-pull operation without needing to turn the train around at terminal stations.
This train is designed for standard-gauge (1,435 mm) electrified tracks under a 25 kV 50 Hz overhead line system, each 6-car train set offers a dual-class seating arrangement featuring Business Class (2+2 seating) and Premier Economy Class (3+2 seating) with rotatable seats, onboard food and beverage counters, dedicated luggage racks, prayer rooms, and fully accessible washroom facilities tailored for Malaysian travelers.
The arrival of EMU101 at Gombak Station initiates a comprehensive phase of dynamic track testing, signal integration, and system commissioning along the fully energized corridor. These rigorous trials will evaluate power distribution, train control communications, and ride comfort along the mountainous terrain and viaducts connecting the East Coast to the Klang Valley.
With main power supplies live and rolling stock testing officially underway, the ECRL project remains firmly on track to begin commercial passenger operations on the Kota Bharu–Gombak alignment by 1 January 2027, promising to cut travel times between Kelantan and Selangor down to approximately four hours.
