The first Completely Built-Up (CBU) set of the new 3CS electric multiple unit (EMU) trains from CRRC Zhuzhou has arrived in Malaysia, marking the arrival of a new generation of commuter trains for the country's northern railway network. The first 3CS set was unloaded from the vessel OCEAN GEMSTONE at Westport on 14 August 2026. Following the unloading process, the train was prepared for its journey from Port Klang to Sentul Depot.
The special train consist formed by 23110 + EMU 63 + 19105 then departed from Westport towards Sentul Depot. The movement attracted attention from railway enthusiasts as the new train was transported by two diesel locomotives. The rare movement also provided an opportunity for railway enthusiasts to spot and photograph the new train at several locations along its route. The 3CS trains have been designated as Class 84, making this a new 3 Car Set EMU class for Malaysia. The first CBU set will be used for commissioning, testing and other preparation works before the trains enter passenger service.
A total of 12 sets of 3CS EMUs are planned for the project. While the first set was manufactured and delivered as a Completely Built-Up unit from CRRC Zhuzhou, the remaining 11 sets are progressively being assembled in Malaysia.
The assembly work is being carried out at CRRC Rolling Stock Center Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. in Batu Gajah, Perak. The local assembly programme will see the remaining trainsets completed before they are delivered for testing and commissioning.
The new 3CS trains feature a refreshed interior and exterior design compared with the existing Komuter trains. The trains also incorporate various upgrades and improvements intended to provide better comfort and a more modern passenger experience.
The new Class 84 3CS trains are planned to enter passenger service on the Komuter Utara sector, which serves passengers across Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak. The service provides an important rail connection for passengers travelling between towns and cities in the northern region, with major stations including Padang Besar, Arau, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam, Taiping and Ipoh.
The introduction of the 3CS Class 84 will bring a new generation of EMU trains to the northern commuter network. The trains feature a refreshed interior and exterior design, together with various upgrades aimed at improving passenger comfort and the overall travel experience.
With 12 sets planned for the fleet, the additional trains will also provide KTM with more trainsets for operations on the Komuter Utara network. This can support increased service frequency and improved headways, depending on operational requirements and the availability of the new trains. Once introduced, the 3CS fleet will become the latest EMU class serving the Komuter Utara sector and will form part of the ongoing development of KTM's northern commuter services.
