KULAI, 16 June 2026 – KTM Berhad officially launched the KTM Komuter Shuttle Selatan service today at Kulai Station, marking a major milestone in the development of rail-based public transport in Johor. The new service aims to improve connectivity between key population centres and industrial areas while serving as the foundation for the future KTM Komuter Selatan network.
The launch ceremony was officiated by Minister of Transport, YB Loke Siew Fook, and attended by Johor Menteri Besar, YAB Dato' Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi, alongside representatives from KTM Berhad, government agencies, industry stakeholders, and members of the media.
The event commenced with the arrival of invited guests and dignitaries before the singing of Bangsa Johor and Negaraku, followed by a prayer recital. In Johor Menteri Besar's welcoming speech, he highlighted the importance of improving public transport infrastructure to support Johor's growing economy and population, particularly within the Greater Johor Bahru region.
During the Minister of Transport launch address, he described Shuttle Selatan as an important interim initiative to enhance rail accessibility in southern Peninsular Malaysia. The service was introduced following strong passenger demand on the recently extended Electric Train Service (ETS) corridor to Johor Bahru, providing additional capacity and greater travel flexibility for commuters and regional travellers.
A launch gimmick was held followed by the presentation of the special Komuter Madani Shuttle Selatan card to selected passengers. The commemorative card which allows unlimited travel on the Shuttle Selatan for 3 months is also available to first 3000 members of the public using the new service.
The first phase of Shuttle Selatan introduces two routes:
JB Sentral – Kulai – JB Sentral
Kempas Baru – Pasir Gudang – Kempas Baru
The Kulai route operates using conventional locomotive-hauled coaches and provides ten daily train services, while the Pasir Gudang route operates using a hybrid train configuration and provides four daily services. The reopening of passenger rail services to Pasir Gudang is particularly significant, marking the return of passenger trains to the line after decades of freight-only operations.
Following a media briefing and photo session onboard the train, invited guests boarded a special Shuttle Selatan service which departed Kulai Station. The train carried the Minister of Transport, dignitaries, and members of the public to Kempas Baru Station, allowing them to experience the new service firsthand. The special train No. 8031 arrived at Kempas Baru Station at approximately 2:40 PM, where the official programme concluded and the special train returns to Kulai as No. 8032.
Looking ahead, the government announced plans to further expand the Southern rail network through the future KTM Komuter Selatan project. Planned improvements include the procurement of ten new commuter train sets, the construction of additional stations at Taman Daya, Bandar Baru Sri Alam, and Pasir Putih, as well as the extension of services beyond Kulai towards Paloh via Kluang, Renggam, and Layang-Layang.
The introduction of Shuttle Selatan represents KTM Berhad's commitment to providing practical and immediate public transport solutions while laying the groundwork for a more comprehensive commuter rail system in Johor. By connecting residential areas, employment centres, educational institutions, and industrial hubs, the service is expected to play an important role in improving mobility and supporting economic growth across the state.
With the successful launch of Shuttle Selatan, Johor takes another significant step towards a more connected, accessible, and sustainable public transport future.
