Today marked the launch of KTM Komuter Shuttle Selatan, a temporary commuter rail service introduced for Malaysia’s Southern Sector as an interim solution ahead of the future Komuter Selatan network. The service replaces selected demand from the former Ekspres Selatan operations between JB Sentral and Gemas, while also addressing ETS capacity constraints following strong demand on the extended ETS Southern Line.
With ETS tickets frequently sold out up to intermediate stations such as Kluang and Gemas, KTM introduced Shuttle Selatan to provide additional capacity and improve regional accessibility. Phase 1 consists of two routes: JB Sentral – Kulai and Kempas Baru – Pasir Gudang, the latter restoring passenger rail services to Pasir Gudang for the first time in decades.
The journey began at Kulai Station at approximately 4:30 AM to catch the first JB Sentral-bound Shuttle Selatan service departing at 4:45 AM. Ticketing was handled via KTM’s KITS system, while onboard rolling stock consisted of locomotive 25203 hauling five ASC coaches and PGC203, previously used in Ekspres Selatan operations.
The train arrived at Kempas Baru at around 5:09 AM, where a connection was made to the second inaugural service from Kempas Baru to Pasir Gudang. This service utilised a hybrid formation consisting of locomotive 24104, EMU25, and PGC219, enabling EMU operation on a non-electrified freight corridor.
The train departed Kempas Baru at 5:20 AM on time, with significant participation from KTM staff and enthusiasts documenting the historic return of passenger services to Pasir Gudang. The journey took approximately 40 minutes, arriving at Pasir Gudang at around 06:07 AM. This marked the first passenger train arrival at the station in decades.
Pasir Gudang Station, a low-platform freight-oriented facility, had been minimally upgraded with basic passenger provisions including shelters, ramps, and stairs for boarding. Ticketing for this service was conducted onboard, similar to select East Coast Line operations where some station facilities remain limited.
After arrival, the same hybrid train was taken back to Kempas Baru, concluding the inaugural Pasir Gudang segment. MTREC representative completed the full Shuttle Selatan experience upon return, having participated in both inaugural routes in a single morning.
Overall, the Shuttle Selatan launch showed KTM’s pragmatic approach in utilising existing rolling stock to rapidly expand service coverage. The restoration of passenger rail to Pasir Gudang and the introduction of additional capacity along the Southern Corridor represent significant milestones in Malaysia’s evolving rail network, highlighting strong potential for future expansion under Komuter Selatan.
